Medieval Studies Certificate

For official information on the Undergraduate Certificate in Medieval Studies, please see the UGA Bulletin. Note that there is currently no equivalent graduate certificate.

Students interested in pursuing the certificate should consult the Bulletin and contact Dr. Camp directly for guidance. Here are some basic principles that will help interested students in assessing the viability of the certificate program for their degree interests:

  • The certificate consists of six 3-credit courses, of which at least three must be outside the student's major or home department
  • There are no required courses or set list of approved courses; all courses must be approved by the Director. Students should plan to save syllabi for any course they wish to count toward the certificate
  • Normally any course with "medieval" or "Middle Ages" in the title will count for the certificate
  • Other courses may count if they include at least 50% medieval content. Normally "medieval" signifies western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire and before the early modern period; 500-1500 CE are the traditional date parameters. However, courses on non-European places and topics may also be eligible.
